(2002) This Tudor Revival house was built in 1920 by landowners Ernest E. and Jane Hemingway. The Hemingway family resided in the house from 1920 to 1959. Dr. Ernest E. Hemingway was a native of Wisconsin who received his bachelor’s degree from Ripon College in 1898. He received his MA in 1902, Ph D in 1904 and his MD in 1908 from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hemingway moved to Seattle’s University District where he held the position of Director of the Marine State Bank, and then became the Director of the University Development Corporation. He was affiliated with of the Masons, Lions, Sigma Xi, Alpha Omega Alpha, and the Municipal League.
This is an intact example of a Tudor Revival Style house in the University Park Neighborhood and is quite different from other Tudor Revival houses in the area.
Based on field work conducted in October 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the University Park neighborhood.

This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 2002 HRI project.
(2002) This two and a half story Tudor Revival style house is situated on a corner lot facing west. The house is clad with stucco and decorative half timbering. The front elevation is composed of two overlapping front gables on the south end. The two gables have half timbering. One of the gables, the smaller of the two, contains the front entrance. Narrow three-part windows with multiple pane glazing flank the entrance. The second, larger gable has three tall narrow windows with multiple pane glazing. Directly above the front entrance are two smaller, narrow windows with multiple pane glazing. Two windows, the same size and type as those in the larger gable, are directly opposite those windows in the large gable. The half story has two small shed dormer windows also with multiple pane glazing. The house has prominent chimneys on the north and south ends of the main gable roof. |
