This modest commercial building was constructed in 1918, when Ross was a lively commercial center and streetcar stop. It is one of the last remaining elements of that commercial center. The village of Ross began in 1878 with the establishment of the Ross School in this vicinity, on the 148-acre homestead claimed by John Ross in 1853. The intersection of 3rd West and Nickerson became a flag stop for the railroad, and several businesses flourished. The best known, the Ross Marche Mercantile, was located on the corner next to this building, where a parking lot is today. This building housed a grocery store for many years, including Cooley’s (1938) and Rolen’s Grocery in 1948. It later had a gift store, a donut shop and several barber shops. However, Clean-M-Rite Cleaners has been here for nearly sixty years, since the early 1940s.

Appearance
This simple commercial vernacular structure appears to be little changed. It retains its large six-part display windows and recessed entries. Small square transom windows above the display windows have been boarded up but are still visible; similar transoms are on the rear. The front façade has a cornice with brackets and a stepped parapet along the side elevations. A wide belt course runs above the windows. Cladding varies, with the original shiplap on the front and horizontal and vertical board, with cornerboards, on the sides. One window on the north is newer, with the original surround. The rear (east) has a small shed-roofed addition, which may have originally been a covered porch.
