This residential vernacular house was built in 1911. The architect and/or builder is unknown. Early ownership is unknown. John E. and Anna F. Ballaine purchased the house in 1923. John Ballaine was the Vice President of the Alaska Pulp, Paper and Hardware Company. The Ballaine family owned the house from 1923 until 1963. University of Washington Architecture Professor Phillip Thiel purchased the house in 1963 and is the current owner and occupant.
This is an unusual house that shows some Craftsman influence. A similar house is located to the west of I-5 freeway at 4749 4th Avenue NE. This house may have been a pattern book design.

Appearance |
This one and a half story Craftsman influenced house is sited facing west on its lot. The roof is front gabled with wide rafters supported by rustic brackets, and has a gabled dormer. The main elevation has a set of multipaned french doors on the first floor and a row of multi-paned windows on the half story. The house is clad in stucco. |
