Historic Name: Orre Residence Common Name: Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman Neighborhood: Wallingford Built By: Year Built: 1917   Significance In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance. This house was built in 1917 by contractor J. E. Erickson for owner Carl A Orre and was designed by prominent local architect Ellsworth Storey (permit #159011). Christine Carr, in her thesis entitled "The Seattle Houses of Ellsworth Storey: Frames and Patterns," identified this house as one of three structures designed by Ellsworth Storey in the Wallingford neighborhood. An early photograph indicates that a detached garage once stood at the southeast corner of the property and was accessed by a driveway extending along the south elevation of the house. Louis Schulte apparently owned the house when the property was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937. It appears to have been purchased by Schulte in 1933. Archie A. Clark and his wife Esther lived in the house from 1938 until 1955 or 1956, although it is not clear if the Clarks had an ownership interest in the property. The current owner, George Durham, appears to have acquired the property in 1956. Some electrical modifications were completed for Durham in 1970. The house is significant as an intact and particularly fine example of the craftsman style designed by an architect whose work later became influential with the local proponents of Modernism and the architects who developed and popularized the Puget Sound variant of the Northwest Style. The house was built in the lull between Seattle’s first and second North End building booms.   Appearance This is a two story, clapboard and shingle clad frame residence built over a full basement on a concrete foundation. The moderately sloped roof, the wide barge boards supported by triangular knee braces, the bungalow style windows, and the wood piers bearing on solid, clapboard clad railings at the gabled entry porch are all typical features of craftsman arts & crafts bungalows in the Wallingford neighborhood. No significant alterations to the house are apparent.
