The Fleury House was built in 1905. Born in French Canada, Joseph Fleury (b. ca 1866), emigrated to Michigan in 1888 and probably started working at a sawmill. During the 14 years residing there Joseph married Michigan born Adeline (b. ca 1876) and started raising a family. In 1903, the Fleurys boarded a train and headed west with their two sons (ages 8 and 5) and three daughters (ages 7, 2, and 1). They settled in Ballard and Joseph Fleury got hired as a saw filer for the Campbell sawmill. The same year he purchased one of the first lots put up for sale in widow Anna Brygger’s subdivision in west Ballard. In the summer 1904 Fleury mortgaged his property to finance the construction for his house. By year’s end the Fleury’s were residing at 702 Times Street, which after Seattle annexed Ballard in 1907, the address changed to 3002 W 58th Street. The Fleurys walked about six blocks to 24th Avenue NW to catch the streetcar to downtown Seattle. By 1910 the Fleury’s added three more children to the family, increasing their clan to ten. To help with the domestic responsibilities the Fleury’s hired Nellie Woodward, a 17 year old daughter of Danish immigrants. During the 40 years the Fleurys lived in the house, Joseph worked for various mills and furniture manufacturers as a sawfiler. He tried going into partnership to operate a new mill, Cascade Shingle Mill, but after just four years the mill closed in 1912 and Fleury never again tried owning a mill. Later occupants. After World War II Sigurd Anderson, a millworker for Stimson Mill Company, and his wife Nettie lived in the house. By 1951 John C. and Isabel Westgarth bought the house and moved in. John C. Westgarth worked at Gunnars Café. Eight years later Village Garage operator Donald R. and wife Norma Nowka occupied the house. In 1979 the Seattle Historic Resources Survey inventoried the house and described it as "Architecturally distinctive, early date." The residence appears to meet City of Seattle Landmark criteria due to the age of the structure (about 100 years old) and minimal alterations.
