Significance
This Georgain Revival house was designed in 1904-05 by architect Edwin Houghton for James R. Stirrat, a very prominent buidlng contractor. Originally from England, Houghton had come to Seatttle in 1889 and became known chiefly for his theater designs, including the Moore Theater. He had a long career, from the post-fire years of the 1880s to the boom years of the 1920s, but few of his works survive. This is in one of the original Capitol Hill plats of James A. Moore, who gave the area its name. In 1900 Moore, who had already developed other Seattle neighborhoods, purchased and began platting 160 acres, roughly between 11th and 20th avenues, from Roy Street north to Galer. Before selling lots for construction, he graded and paved the streets (eliminating the dust that plagued many sections), installed sidewalks, water mains and sewer lines, and planned for street lights and telephone poles. Lots went on sale in 1901, heavily promoted to attract local business leaders as residents. The response was immediate. The quality infrastructure, convenient transportation, schools and other amenities proved to be very popular and the area was largely developed, with sizable, attractive houses, within only a few years.

Appearance
This large house has a hipped roof with a large central dormer and bracketed eaves. The entry porch projects at the center of the main (west) façade; it has a flat roof suported by large square posts on the outside and Ionic columns inside of them. Above the porch are two one-over-one windows flanked by two oval windows. Flaning the porch at groudn level are two large windows with leaded upper sashes. The corners are marked with red sandstone quoins. There is a newer garage addtion on the south side.
