Based on field work conducted in September 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the Georgetown neighborhood.
This is an altered but relatively intact historic property that may possess some limited architectural and/or historic significance.
(1997) This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner/builder of this house has not been identified. Wilder Bruce (see GT033) is known to have owned the house c. 1910 and Remi (and Florence) Claeys, a cabinet maker, appears to have purchased it c. 1922. This property may pre-date the construction date identified on assessor’s records and is worthy of additional research to determine a more accurate date of construction and original ownership.

No substantive change to building form or historic building fabric/features since 1997 HRI project.
(1997) An altered, however partly intact, example of Queen Anne residential design, a dominant architectural style used for domestic building during the late 19th C. This Queen Anne cottage house type measures approximately 1400 sq. ft and exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric, including: a simple asymmetrical building form accentuated by a prominent main truncated hip roof form punctuated by low gable roof forms at the side and front elevations, side bay window with bracketed details, and original tall, narrow double-hung windows set in groups of two. The design is further distinguished by a prominent entry porch that has been altered but retains some original spindle-work. A portion of the original red brick chimney remains in place. Ornate running and standing interior trim remains in place and is visible through the windows. The house was originally clad with rustic, dropped siding, however it is now entirely covered by asbestos shake type cladding. Ornate window surrounds, cornice and corner boards and decorative surface treatments have either been removed or covered. The current entry porch includes a large entry door with sidelights and a concrete porch deck that are both out-of-character with the Queen Anne design mode. Historic tax records indicate that the house was remodeled in 1929. It appears likely that the porch was altered to some degree at that time. The house was again remodeled in 1958 in order to add six sleeping rooms in the basement level. A large two-bay garage structure was previously situated nearby behind the residence. Portions of the old concrete floor and foundation remain on site. |
