Significance
This structure was built in 1910 by D. J. Orner of Orner & Son for owner F. H. Peterson, who maintained offices at 410 Mutual Life Building. The building almost immediately began undergoing a number of modifications to meet the requirements of various tenants and building owners. In 1938, tenants included Barclay's Grocery, Kenwood Market, and Sires Brothers Paint Company. In 1956 tenants included Lamont's Food Center, Kenwood Market, and another small office. A recent well known tenant was the Honey Bear Bakery, now moved to the Ravenna neighborhood. The most prominent sign on the building today reads "TangleTown," an expression used by nearby residents to describe the non-rectilinear and sometimes confusing street sytem in the immediate vicinity of the building.Although the buiding has undergone extensive and significant changes in appearance over the years, its location at an important, well traveled intersection (Meridian Avenue N. and N. 56th Street) and the popularity of some of its past tenants have combined to give the building some prominence in the Wallingford neighborhood.
