Clarence and Irene, House Common Name: Style: Tudor Neighborhood: University Built By: Year Built: 1920   Significance In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local). (2014) Based on field work conducted in October 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the University Park neighborhood. (2002) This Tudor Revival style residence is sited on a larger lot than most other houses on 17th Avenue NE, but it still has the side gable entry common to houses along this street (probably because of the narrow lots in the University Park addition). It is a good example of a Tudor Revival style residence in the University District, and it is quite different from any of the other Tudor style houses in the area. The house was built by J.C. Buie in 1920. J. Clarence Buie and his wife Irene only lived in the house for two years. J.C. Buie was the manager of Collier's Weekly and later executive secretary of the First Methodist Episcopal Church at Fifth and Marion in downtown Seattle Later residents included William Patterson, an engineer, and his wife Edith, E.W. Templeton, and Kenneth Clark from about 1957 until at least 1988.   Appearance (2014) This property exhibits no substantive changes to the exterior appearance since it was identified in the 2002 HRI project.  (2002) This imposing Tudor Revival style residence has a combination of brick veneer cladding below and stucco and half-timbering above. It has groups of multi-paned double hung wood windows and a prominent external chimney on the north elevation. The brick is clinker brick, which gives it a rustic look. The entrance is on the north elevation and the porch has a gabled pediment, with half-timbering. There is a brick retaining wall along the sidewalk that matches the house. There is a matching detached garage located on the alley. There are shed roofed wall dormers on the north and south elevations.
