The Gelb Building was built in 1927 and was occupied for many years by clothing shops and dressmakers. Arnstein’s Boys and Mens Shop (Millards Boys and Menswear) occupied the Gelb Building from 1949-1982. The architects Schack, Young and Myers designed the building. It is a good example of a relatively intact typical commercial building of the 1920s with some cast stone detail.
Schack, Young and Myers was a well-known firm of Seattle architects and engineers who designed many commercial buildings in the 1920s. The firm designed several other buildings in the University District including the Eldridge Buick dealership on the corner of NE 45th Street and Roosevelt Way, the Theta Xi Fraternity, and the University Baptist Church on 12th Avenue NE. James Hansen Schack and David John Myers were architects, and Arrigo M. Young was an engineer. The firm was founded in 1920, and Myers left the firm in 1929. Most designs by Schack, Young & Myers were in academic eclectic styles.

Appearance |
The Gelb Building is a two-story, solid brick building with attractive cast stone detailing. Distinctive segmental transom windows distinguish two storefronts. A door between the two storefronts echoes the segmental design of the transoms. This building also exhibits some cast stone details drawn from Collegiate Gothic style. The three pairs of double-hung second-story windows appear to be original. The storefronts have both been altered, with doors and windows replaced. |
