Significance |
|
This concrete building was designed in 1956 by architect Don Williams for the Gold Star Corporation, a real estate company. Much of the space was devoted to a print shop, in addition to the real estate office. The company remained here, along with several business supply companies, until the 1980s. The building then became a Catholic bookstore run by the Paulist order. It is now part of a complex of adjacent buildings owned by the Catholic archdiocese to serve the homeless. The upper part is a shelter and the lower part has been used, variously, as a café, art gallery and studio for homeless people.

Appearance |
The building is of precast concrete panels with large display windows on the first floor and smaller windows on the second. A partial third story was added in 1969. The upper windows may have been added; in any case, they have been modernized. Some alterations have been made to the entries as well. |
