Based on field work conducted in October 2014, this historic property retains its relationship to the streetscape, historic building form and a sufficient amount of exterior historic building fabric (design features, cladding and/or window sash/openings) to contribute to the distinct character of the University Park neighborhood.
This Craftsman style residence occupies a prominent site overlooking Ravenna Boulevard near where it connects to 17th Avenue NE (formerly Campus Boulevard). It is a good example of the Craftsman style, with its low-angled side gable roof, full width front porch, and wide overhanging eaves with prominent brackets.
From 1928-1939, the owners were Arthur F. and Frances Rarig. Mr. Rarig was a teacher at Roosevelt High School. Later residents included Barbara Lewis, Herbert Wen, Wanda Milner, and Michael Canatsey.

| Appearance |
| This one-and-one-half story house is a good example of the Craftsman style, with its low angled side gable roof, large front porch with square columns, and wide overhanging eaves. The roof angle changes at the porch line. The house has shed roofed dormers on the north and south elevations. It has a bay window on the west elevation. The windows are double-hung wood windows. There are some leaded glass windows on the first floor, north elevation.
Some repairs were made due to fire damage in 1917. A detached garage was constructed in 1921 on the alley. A small addition was constructed by owner Michael Canatsey in 1975. The changes are primarily on the east side and rear. There is a small addition on the east elevation between the first and second floors, built in 1996. A small railing on a balcony above the porch has been removed.
The house takes advantage of its prominent location overlooking Ravenna Boulevard. |
