This house, a good example of the more elaborate expression of the Craftsman style, was built in 1912 by a contractor, Herman H. Austin. The original owner was Alex M. Bryce, a manager at the customs house brokerage, W. J. Byrnes & Company. Bryce and later his widow, Mrs. Gertrude Bryce, lived here though the 1960s.

Appearance |
The house has a hipped roof with a prominent gabled wing in the front. Cladding is clinker brick on the first story, with heavy gray stucco on the second floor; a wide wood belt course separates the materials. The gabled section, supported by two square brick columns, projects from the main façade, with an entry porch below. The first story has two three-part windows with leaded transoms. Second floor windows are narrow four-over-one casements, with a group of six windows in the gable end and three more to the side. Most windows on the other elevations are similar. The gabled end is highly decorated in the craftsman style, with a wide pierced bargeboard, five knee brackets, half timbering and a decorative window surround. There is a hipped dormer on the south elevation. |
