Significance
This modest brick building was constructed in 1917 as a typical retail structure with three storefronts and display windows with transoms. In 1937 it was the McGrath Candy Company, which probably manufactured and sold candy here. In 1942 the building was purchased by the Millionair Club. In 1969 the club completely remodeled the facility with new windows and some new cladding. The interior was converted to a large dining room with a kitchen and storerooms to provide meals for homeless people. The Millionair Club Charity was founded in 1921 in Pioneer Square, and moved to this location in 1942. The goal of its founder, Martin Johanson, was to provide jobs as well as meals for homeless people, in order to encourage self-reliance. The charity now serves 10,000 meals a month as well as operating a job dispatch center, a free vision clinic and a hygiene center with access to shower and laundry facilities (www.millionairclub.org).
